A woman in Jefferson Parish is shot by police during a traffic stop. This tragic incident sheds light on law enforcement encounters gone wrong.

A 62-year-old woman was shot multiple times by deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday afternoon after she allegedly pointed a gun at them during a standoff outside a Dollar General store in Marrero.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the incident began around 2:15 p.m. when deputies stopped a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the store located on the 7300 block of Westbank Expressway. The driver, identified as a woman from Lafitte, was sitting in a 2001 Isuzu SUV when deputies approached her.

The sheriff’s office reports that deputies noticed the woman had what looked like a firearm. They then retreated from the vehicle and issued loud commands for her to exit with her hands raised.

Footage obtained by Fox 8 shows the woman inside the vehicle, pointing a gun out of the driver’s side window. She then exited the car with her hands up, but shortly afterward, lowered her hands and pointed the weapon toward the deputies.

A few minutes later, Lopinto says the woman stepped out of the vehicle and aimed her gun at multiple deputies. Two officers fired shots after she directed her weapon at one of them.

The woman was hit several times and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Once she recovers, she will face multiple charges, including several counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has not yet released her name or her current condition.
