EUGENE, Ore. – This Oregon bar fight shooting leads to Eugene police arresting two suspects who allegedly exchanged gunfire early Friday morning in downtown Eugene, according to authorities.

The Eugene Police Department said they responded at shortly after 1:30 a.m. on January 5 to reports of two individuals allegedly exchanging gunfire in an alley near Olive Street and West 8th Alley. Two officers who were nearby spotted the two suspects running away in a nearby parking lot, police said. EPD officials said the officers apprehending and arrested both suspects and recovered a gun. A short time later, police contacted an individual with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury who was admitted to a local hospital, authorities said. Police said they determined the Oregon bar fight shooting originated in a dispute at the Horsehead Bar that spilled outside into the street.

Ramon Ayala was in the area when the gunfire began, and he said several rounds were fired.

“I heard loud bangs,” Ayala said. “It was definitely crazy. The people around here are usually pretty laid back and stuff, and it didn’t seem like anything like that would ever happen because we’re in Eugene, and there’s literally cop cameras all over downtown.”

People who work in downtown Eugene like Curran Richcreek, a barber at Analog Barbershop, said more safety precautions need to be taken in the downtown area and inside the bars.

“They’re not patting people down from the bars anymore, and that shooting happened because there was an altercation at the bar,” Richcreek said. “We need a bigger show of force and security at lease just to make it safe for the people that just want to come down here and have a good time.”

According to Eugene Police, one way they have boosted security is their Downtown Support Team. Police said they can be spotted working in pairs, patrolling the streets on foot with bright-yellow jackets, and they are trained in EPD and City of Eugene policies as well as de-escalation, first aid, CPR, and more.

The two suspects arrested for Friday morning’s shooting were lodged at the Lane County Jail, authorities said.
