Shovel-Wielding Man Shot by Police Outside California Elementary School
20On September 15, 2025, a shocking incident unfolded outside John Marshall Elementary School in Anaheim, California, where police fatally shot a man wielding a shovel. The event, captured on body camera footage, has sparked widespread attention and raised questions about the circumstances leading to the shooting.
The day began with a 911 call at around 12:10 p.m., reporting a suspicious man who appeared to be homeless and under the influence of drugs. He was seen standing outside a home, holding a brick. About half an hour later, an officer arrived at the scene, but the situation had escalated. A second call came in from an employee at John Marshall Elementary School, reporting that the same man was now near the campus, pacing around with a broken shovel.
The man, identified as Rudy Anthony Martinez II, 36, was seen using a crosswalk with the shovel slung over his shoulder. As an unidentified police officer approached, Martinez noticed the patrol car and ran toward it with the shovel raised over his head. Dash camera footage shows Martinez striking the vehicle several times, prompting the officer to get out of the car.
“Sit down,” the officer commanded as Martinez continued to strike the vehicle. “Sit… you’re gonna get shot.”
Body camera footage then shows Martinez charging directly at the officer with the shovel raised, leading the officer to fire at least four shots. Martinez fell to the ground, motionless, and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital about half an hour after the incident.
The officer was not injured, and a shovel with a broken handle was recovered from the scene. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the shooting. The incident prompted John Marshall Elementary School to go into a temporary lockdown, but thankfully, no students were exposed to the shooting.
This event highlights the quick and sometimes violent nature of police encounters, especially when suspects are armed with makeshift weapons. The release of the body camera footage has provided a raw and unfiltered look at the events leading up to the shooting, offering a glimpse into the split-second decisions made by law enforcement officers in high-pressure situations.
